Frequently Asked Questions

Your Comprehensive Guide to SONiC-Powered Architecture, NPB Capabilities & Cloud Deployment.
Does Asterfusion support packet broker functionality across all device series?
Yes, all series in the campus and data center lines, as well as the ET series, support packet broker functionality. Among them, the campus series (except for the CX306P-48Y-M-H) and data center series devices support basic functionalities, while the CX306P-48Y-M-H and ET series support both standard and advanced functionalities.
List some standard and advanced features.

As shown in the image, the features include various standard and advanced functionalities based on the packet broker’s capabilities.
What type of hardware architecture is used in this packet broker solution?
The solution uses standard Ethernet switch ASICs as the underlying hardware. It supports common switch chips, including Marvell (Prestera & Teralynx) and Broadcom (Trident 3 & Tomahawk), ensuring that the hardware evolves alongside advancements in switching technology. Additionally, it leverages the Marvell OCTEON 10 series chips to provide advanced features for the open packet broker.
What is the range of port speeds supported by the hardware?
Asterfusion offers a full-stack product line ranging from 1G to 800G, covering all scenarios from campus networks to data centers.
  • Industry Leading: Asterfusion has one of the few 64 x 800G NPB devices in the industry, capable of handling the massive traffic generated by AI large model training.
  • High-Density Expansion: Through breakout cables, the 800G device can be converted into 512 x 100G high-density ports, significantly lowering the cost per port.
What cost-saving advantages does this hardware solution provide?
In addition to using universal ASICs to lower initial procurement costs, this hardware performs excellently in inline deployment modes. In data center interconnect (DCI) scenarios, our hardware allows customers to replace expensive ZR modules with lower-cost 400G VR/SR optical modules, significantly reducing overall deployment costs.
What security guarantees are provided at the hardware level?
The solution utilizes the native hardware encryption capabilities of the switch ASICs and supports MACsec (Media Access Control Security) technology. This enables the NPB to implement line-rate encryption at the data link layer without additional hardware costs, effectively preventing traffic eavesdropping risks in long-distance transmission (e.g., ISP dark fiber).
Does the device support modern operations and maintenance methods (DevOps)?
  • Automated Deployment: Provides Ansible templates that support one-click operation of thousands of policies through Ansible Playbooks, solving the inefficiency of traditional Web UI configuration.
  • Visualization Monitoring: Integrated with Prometheus and Grafana templates, enabling real-time monitoring of critical metrics such as CPU, traffic rate, and packet loss, addressing the lack of a unified monitoring view in traditional NPBs.
