Questions & Answers

What is an OSFP transceiver module?
An OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceiver module is a high-speed optical transceiver designed for data centers.

How does SR8 vary from previous classifications such as LR4, DR4, or SR4?

These labels relate to the number of optical lanes, fiber type, and reach:
SR8: (Short Reach 8-channel): 8 optical lanes, MMF, extremely short reach (up to 100m).
SR4: (Channel Short Reach) uses four optical lanes, MMF, and a relatively short reach (up to 100m).
Data Center Reach 4-channel, or DR4 uses four optical lanes, SMF, and a greater reach of up to 500 meters.
SMF is used in LR4 (Long Reach 4-channel), which has four optical lanes and a long reach of up to 10 kilometers.

What are common types of 800G optical transceivers?
OSFP (Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable) transceiver modules designed for long-distance data transmission over metropolitan and wide-area networks.
QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density) transceiver modules designed for connecting different parts of a campus or large building.

What are some standard procedures for troubleshooting?

Fiber Inspection: Verify that the MMF cables are clean and connected correctly. Make use of a fiber scope.
Make sure that the transceiver is completely inserted in the OSFP port.
Router/Switch Configuration: Verify that the port is set up properly for 800G.
Optical transmission and receive power levels should be monitored.
Loopback Testing: To identify the problem, run loopback tests.
Examine the logs: Check for problems in the switch/router logs.
